Root barriers can be made from a variety of materials, including plastic, metal, and concrete. They are typically installed vertically in a trench around the area to be protected, and extend several feet deep to prevent roots from growing underneath. Root barriers work by creating a physical barrier that roots cannot penetrate. When roots come into contact with the barrier, they are redirected and forced to grow in a different direction. This prevents the roots from causing damage to infrastructure or interfering with other plants in the area.
